Can I have that baby?
I've never been to Mardi Gras. I made it to New Orleans only once for Jazz Fest (1999) and that was one of the most fun weekends of my life, sneaking away from my friends sitting in the main stage field and repeatedly heading to the gospel tent.
Picture it: Boston, 2000. I'm in an apartment with 3 Massholes, one of whom had graduated from Tulane. He had a king cake (which I had never heard of, but hey, it was cake!). The boys started devouring it with a purpose that was more intense than just getting flour and butter in their bellies. They kept yelling about a baby. I thought, "There's a game involved in the cake? I'm in!" I started digging, not really knowing what I was looking for. Then, as quickly as it began, the game was over. Mr. Tulane had the baby in his piece. Being a competitive sort, I was devastated. I looked up at him and pleaded, "Can I have that baby?" He laughed and handed it over. I still carry it around with me as if I were the winner that day.
Happy Mardi Gras. Cheers to everyone landing on their feet soon and to a baby in every cake.
