MPAA head Jack Valenti, on the film industry's recent win in MGM v. 321 Studios: "If you buy a DVD you have a copy. If you want a backup copy you buy another one."
I suppose the same could be said for that perfect pair of jeans you wish you could make over a thousand times. The fact Jack and many others aren't willing to face is that everyone has the technology to perfectly copy a movie or CD, but we can't do that with good-fitting jeans. The movie business is no Levi's factory, and the secret is out... Now we must simply focus on how to compensate artists for their original, creative expressions fixed into a medium. Voluntary collective licensing, compulsory licensing... who knows what will work best?
